COMMON PODIATRY CONDITIONS: BUNIONS
A bunion is a painful bump that often develops at the base of the big toe, causing the big toe to be pushed towards the other toes. The bunion forms around the joint that bends when the patient walks, and this can cause pain because weight is being applied on the swollen joint. Often, the protruding joint also causes calluses to form as it rubs against shoes.
Bunions can be treated with custom-built orthotic devices, the appropriate footwear and certain bunion pads to relieve painful symptoms.
